Denver-based Energy Fuels announced on Thursday that it has produced its first kilogram of dysprosium oxide at its White Mesa mill in Utah, marking a step toward commercial-scale output of heavy rare earths in the US.

The company achieved 99.9% purity at pilot scale, exceeding the 99.5% commercial specification, it said in a statement.

Production is running at about two kilograms a week using monazite mined in Florida and Georgia. Energy Fuels said it was the first US company to both produce high-purity dysprosium oxide and disclose output levels.

Pilot operations are expected to yield about 15 kg of dysprosium oxide before shifting to terbium oxide production, with first samples targeted for the fourth quarter of 2025. The company is also planning to install large-scale separation capacity for dysprosium, terbium and potentially other heavy rare earth oxides at the mill by late 2026.

“Energy Fuels’ high purity Dy oxide production is a major leap toward securing a US supply of ‘heavy’ rare earth oxides for a variety of commercial and defense uses,” CEO Mark Chalmers said in the statement. “This is real, high-quality material in-hand, ready for independent testing, demonstrating that our Utah facilities can deliver world-class critical minerals domestically.”

The development builds on last year’s commissioning of the mill’s light rare earth circuit, which successfully produced on-spec neodymium-praseodymium oxide used in permanent magnets for electric vehicles, wind turbines and defence technologies.

Energy Fuels is also the leading US producer of uranium concentrate.
